The Con Artist

The year was 2015.

Doyle was a tiny little man. He was about what a hobbit would look like if they existed. He was short, and fat with a receding hairline, and a handle-bar mustache like he was right out of an old biker movie, or the village people.

Doyle was driving a junkie old cargo van down the freeway with his wife, Betsy. Betsy was short, and fat with short black hair.

Smoke started pouring out from under the hood of the old van, and Doyle took the next exit slowly driving down the road, and he stopped in the parking lot of what used to be a truck stop.

The truck stop was once thriving at the west end of a small town that depended on tourism to survive, but the truck stop died because they built a new highway that takes you to the opposite side of town.

Because of the new highway all of the businesses on the west end of town were either already dead, or dying. A lot of people lost their lively hood all because the road was changed.

Doyle parked the van in the parking lot of the old truck stop, and he got out of the van, and opened the hood. A cloud of smoke spewed from under the hood. Betsy climbed down from the passenger seat of the van, and walked away from the van.

“Where the hell do you think you’re going?” Doyle asked. “I need to pee.” Betsy said. “This place ain’t open.” Doyle said. “I don’t care. I’m gonna find a place to pee.” She said.

Betsy walked away from the van, and she went around behind the old truck stop, and walked into the back door of the building, and she walked into a small dark room, maybe it was an office, and she pulled her pants down, and squatted down peeing all over the floor.

Doyle reached into the hood pulling a hose off of the radiator. The hose has a hole in it. He kicked the front bumper of the van, and slammed the hood down.

Betsy walked back out the back door of the building then back around the left side of the building, and back to the van.

“Did you get it fixed?” She asked. “No, the radiator hose has a big hole in it.” He said. “How are we gonna get to where we were going now?” She asked. “It doesn’t look like we will.” He said.

“What are we gonna do then?” She asked. “I don’t know yet. We will have to see if we can get a place to stay here in this town until the van gets fixed.” He said. “How are we gonna get the van fixed?” She asked.

“I’ll have to find some work to do.” He said. “What kind of work do you think you’re gonna find in a town that looks like it’s almost dead?” She asked. “I don’t know, but there has to be something.” He said.

“How are we gonna make it into town?” She asked.
